The pioneering three-seat McLaren F1 will be reinvented and relaunched in 2018 thanks to the British car manufacturer’s Special Operations division.
In a production run between 1992-1999 McLaren made 108 examples of the groundbreaking F1 hypercar. In 1998, McLaren cemented the status of one of the most important performance cars ever made when they eclipsed Jaguars production car top speed record in logging a 390.7km/h top speed- a mark that stood for seven years until the Bugatti Veyron became the first road car to eclipse the 400km/h barrier in 2005.
The all-new Mclaren F1 will not aim to eclipse the performance figures of the mind-bending P1 GTR, instead looking to pay homage to the original F1 in the form of a three-seat grand tourer.
Autocar UK reports that the British manufacturer will use a modified version of their 3.8L twin-turbo V8 engine that will produce more than 500kW and excel to a top speed in excess of 320km/h. This means that Mclaren’s ‘Grand Tourer’ will boast a greater power-to-weight ratio than the 650S while also providing the level of comfort and refinement that buyers would expect from a car capable of handling long drives.
The launch of the McLaren F1 GT is likely to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the original F1 in 2018. The new model is part of a broader plan from McLaren to deliver 15 new models by 2022.
