900HP Ford Mustang GT

Paragraph

Let’s be honest, the Ford Mustang GM GT Fastback will never be renowned for its track prowess. Despite a raucous 5.0-litre V8 and ‘sporting heritage’, there are more than a handful of European hot hatches for the same money that will run rings around it on a race track. That, however, is beside the point.

Buying a Mustang isn’t a rational decision. Buying a Mustang is a statement. It tells the world that you could care less about how fast you’re going around a race track – as long as you’re having a tail sliding good time while doing it. And you will be.

With the demise of the Australian built V8 engine, the Ford Mustang captured a once fiercely loyal audience of Aussie muscle car fans. It’s also captured the imagination of buyers who would usually allocate their $60,000 car fund to a sensible, 2.0-litre four-cylinder prestige German sedan or coupe.

From the factory, this 2017 Ford Mustang GM GT Fastback features a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine that produces 306kW of power and 530Nm of torque. Enough to propel the 1701kg coupe to 100km/h in 4.8-seconds in a cloud of smoke and pantomime that would otherwise be reserved for larger, more-expensive German sedans.

This, however, is no stock car. This is a 1 of 1 build by one of Australia’s most acclaimed Mustang dealers – Black Widow. This 900HP Ford Mustang Build features in excess of $50,000 worth of modifications and a slightly lairy paintjob (although, you are driving around with 900 ponies under your right foot, so what’s a bit of colour contrast).

The biggest upgrade obviously occurs under the bonnet. The 5.0-litre Coyote V8 has been fitted with an Edelbrock Eforce Supercharge with a Stage 2 ECU upgrade so that the onboard computer has some idea of what to do with the power. Performance Exhaust System with Kooks Headers means that you won’t go unnoticed even under very mild throttle. Standard wheels have been upgraded to 20 inch Velgen Classic 5 and wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Tyres. Prospective buyers will want to set aside a tyre budget and get to know their local distributor.

With $50,000 worth of upgrades, the 900HP Ford Mustang is justifiably more expensive than the $60,000 base price for a Ford Mustang GM GT Fastback. A 900HP Ford Mustang may not be the most refined or sensible way to spend $89,990, but it could well be the most enjoyable.
