A victim of BMW’s marketing division, the 1M Coupe was heavily detuned from the factory so that it couldn’t outrun its more expensive older brother, the E92 M3. With an RRP of $99,990, the 1M coupe was significantly cheaper than the M3 and, for those willing to explore the potential of the motor, capable of being much faster in a straight line. With a simple ECU tune, the 1M will decimate the naturally aspirated V8 E92 M3 in a sprint to 100km/h and provide significantly more usable torque.
For BMW aficionados, the 1M is significant in the German manufacturers history as it will go down as one of the first M cars to utilise forced induction. Despite mixed reviews at the time of its release, the 3.0L Twin Turbo Inline Six is an absolute gem with more accessible torque and power than the E92 M3 and only a fraction slower to 100km/h (4.6sec vs. 4.9sec).
A limited production run, stunning silhouette and an astonishing power plant means that low mileage examples of the 1M are rightfully holding 70% or more of their initial value. For BMW fans, the 1M is one of the most desirable and collectable coupe’s to come out of Stuttgart in the last twenty years.
