Bugatti Chiron Roadster is a No-Go

When it comes to making road cars, Bugatti don’t play by anyone’s rules, not even their own. In contrast to the record breaking Veyron Hypercar that resurrected the French manufacturer from the brink, Bugatti have ruled out a convertible version of their new hypercar, the Bugatti Chiron.

In a move that is sure to disappoint mega-rich Bugatti enthusiasts who aren’t afraid of having their mug snapped by hordes of ‘car spotters’ each time they pop down to the shops, Head of sales and marketing at Bugatti, Dr. Stefan Brungs, this week told Autocar UK that there will no “no roadster or convertible” version of the Bugatti Chiron.

Brungs didn’t provide a definitive reason behind the decision, however, the financial woes of Bugatti’s parent company, Volkswagen Auto Group, in the wake of the Dieselgate emissions scandal may be a telling factor.

For now, Bugatti are focusing their effort on finding owners for the limited production run of 500 Bugatti Chiron’s that have already been confirmed by the French manufacturer. Since unveiling the £2 million ($3.6M AUD) supercar in March of this year, Bugatti have already sold 165 units.

The Chiron will be powered by an 1103kW/1500Nm 8.0L quad-turbo W16 engine that is expected to eclipse the 268mph (431km/h) top speed set by its predecessor, the 882kW Bugatti Veyron Supersport.
