The Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series Coupe is Mercedes-Benz answer to the Porsche 911 GT3 and BMW M3 GTS. The C63 Black features a more powerful version of Mercedes legendary 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8, motorsport-inspired suspension, and a slew of ‘black series’ upgrades that set it apart from a regular C63 AMG.

What Sets the Black Series Apart from a ‘Regular’ AMG C63?

For starters, AMG’s 6.2-litre V8 engine has been revised with forged pistons, conrod’s and a lightweight crankshaft from the Mercedes SLS. In addition to a revised, more-aggressive ECU, the C63 AMG Black Series produces 380kW of power and 620Nm of torque – up 44kW and 20Nm from the standard car.

It means three-tenths are timed off the 0-100km/h time – now 4.2-seconds – and the car weighs 20kg less than the standard car. Coilovers suspension, wider front and rear tyres and broader wheel arches also mean that the Black Series is more competent around a race track.

The only drawback to the Black Series is the MCT auto gearbox (a wet clutch replaces the torque converter) that falls short of the PDK box in the 911 GT3. Changes take just 100 milliseconds but the gearbox isn’t quite as intuitive as it should be. Still, it’s a significant improvement on the MCT gearbox found in the standard C63 AMG which is indecisive and slow, even in manual mode.

Should You Buy the C63 AMG Black Series?

Yes, absolutely you should.

This C63 Black Series is just one of 32 examples offered to the Australian market in a limited global run of 1170. Perhaps most significantly, this is the final (and best) incarnation of Mercedes AMG’s legendary naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 engine.

When it was released in 2012, several motoring journalists names it AMG’s best ever car. Now, in 2018 with smaller displacement, forced induction AMGs the only option, this C63 AMG Black Series is more desirable than ever.
