The Cayman has always been a dark horse, its mid-engine layout, aerodynamic shape and 50/50 weight distribution makes it the ideal platform to build an exceptionally fast track car. Unfortunately, the Cayman has never been given the same opportunity as its bigger brother, the 911- Porsche has held it back all the while knowing that all that was needed was a bigger engine for the Cayman to become a phenomenal driver’s car. The GT4 is significant for the Cayman and for the Porsche range, it is the first time the small coupe has been granted more power than a 911- an act Porsche conservatives may consider blasphemy.
The Cayman GT4 is the most driver centric car in the Porsche line-up. The six speed manual transmission is paired with the same naturally aspirated 3.8L engine from the 991 Carrera S to produce a healthy 283kW/420Nm that will propel the coupe to 100km/h in 4.4sec. Whilst 0-100km/h times are nice; they don’t tell the story of how capable this Cayman really is- the GT4 is a track focussed machine. Don’t expect to see many of them on the road as most of them will be reserved for weekend track work or spirited backroad driving by their lucky owners.
Australia’s allocation of the Cayman GT4 sold out well before they hit the showroom floor. If you didn’t know the right person or you weren’t on Porsche’s list of big spenders there was no chance that you were going to get your hands on this extremely limited car. This racing yellow GT4 is just one of three examples currently for sale in Australia and is sure to be a future classic as the first Cayman to outshine Porsche’s moniker badge, the 911.
