Buying a BMW M5 used to be a straightforward exercise. You chose your colour, ticked some options and away you went. In 2015, however, the buying process is a bit more confusing, for starters, M5 buyers must now choose between three variants: The ‘Pure Edition’, The ‘Regular’ and if you’re lucky enough, the range topping Nighthawk version that we see here.
The BMW M5 Nighthawk is a guaranteed future classic with just ten available for purchase in Australia. The limited edition run gains some extra gear in the way of 20-inch M Double Spoke alloys and Merino Leather that you don’t get in the regular M5 for a minor price premium (less than $10k extra), but the name of the game with the BMW M5 Nighthawk is exclusivity.
The BMW M5 Nighthawk doesn’t offer any additional power over the regular variant; however, the standard 423KW and 680NM available from 4.4L Twin-Turbo V8 is good for 0-100 in 4.2sec and plenty of sideways fun. Add in an ECU tune and some wider rear tyres and you can expect to see that number drop to the mid 3 second range.
