The B5 Audi RS4 was the successor to the ground-breaking Audi RS2, the Porsche and Audi co-developed car that catapulted Audi to the head of the hot wagon stakes. When it hit the market in 2000, the B5 RS4 was the most powerful production car that Audi had ever made. Powered by a Cosworth developed 2.7L twin-turbo V6 that produced a supercar baiting 280kW/440Nm, the all-wheel drive wagon launched to 100km/h in 4.9sec- just 0.4sec slower than Ferrari’s Flagship 360 supercar from the same year.
The B5 is an important model in the history of fast wagons. The trend of obscenely fast, unassuming family cars was kick-started with the RS2 and then brought to mainstream attention with the RS4. The 2.7L twin-turbo V6 in the B5 is the perfect tuning platform for those looking to build a practical, big power wagon. With the addition of a simple ECU tune and downpipe the RS4 will be pushing more than 350kW and out sprint the current naturally aspirated V8 B8 RS4.
This black RS4 is currently the only B5 on the market. With 139,900km on the clock the twin-turbo V6 still has a lot of life left in it, given it shares many parts with the popular B5 S4 it is surprisingly affordable if something were to go wrong. The B5 RS4 is already a favourite amongst Audi RS fans and is a bonafide future classic that will continue to appreciate in value over the coming years as clean examples become increasingly difficult to find.
