When this Datsun 1600 rolled off the production line in 1972, Datsun had little idea of the future that it had ahead of it. The Datsun 1600 started out its life with an aspirated 1.6L 4 cylinder, fast forward forty years, and the 1600 is now powered by an SR20DET out of a Nissan Silvia S15.
With a wealth of aftermarket parts and tuning potential, the SR20DET a logical addition to the 1600’s engine bay. The 4-speed manual has been swapped out in place of a six speed manual that works seamlessly with the SR20DET. The addition of a Haltech computer and boost controller means this 965kg Datsun is now putting down 200rwkw- roughly 250kW at the engine.
The Datsun 1600 has received front brakes out of the Nissan Silvia S15 to manage the additional power of the SR20DET. With 70,000km on the new engine there is still a lot of life left in the Datsun 1600 and the potential to extract more power from the S15 engine.
