First revealed at the 1989 Frankfurt Motorshow, the BMW 8 series became one of the most iconic designs of the 1990’s. In a production run that lasted ten years between 1989 and 1999, the BMW E31 was a popular choice for business executives looking to eat up highway miles in supreme comfort and style.
From a performance perspective, the BMW 8 Series was never the perception-altering sportscar that many expected it to be. With 210kW/420Nm and a 0-100km/h time of 7.2sec, the 840Ci was no slouch, however, its silky smooth engine and comfortable ride never really conveyed any great sense of urgency. It was the 840Ci’s ability to cruise the Autobahn at its electronically limited top speed of 155mph made it the obvious choice for the mature executive.
With a long list of features well ahead of its time including; cruise control, ABS brakes, traction control, power windows and climate control, this 1999 840Ci still manages to feel modern in 2016. With just three examples currently for sale in Australia, the shark nose E31 8-series is likely to appreciate over the next decade as they cement their classic status with BMW enthusiasts.
